Silent Lovers
Midori left the Pheonix Dojo after a long day of training with her mother, Noriko. Her bright green eyes looked to the sky. The sun would be setting in an hour. Smiling, she nodded and continued on, passing by a certain Crane dojo. She stopped and then backed up. She took a deep breath and then walked to the door. Bowing, she entered to see Lady Mitsuko and Mitsu talking. She pressed her lips together and looked to the right where she saw Lord Thraster and her father training. Offering a small smile, she then looked to the left where she saw a boy about her age win a duel with another boy. Her small smile turned to a grin. She clapped her hands as she walked over to him. "That was wonderful! Well done. I am not as gifted with a sword as you, Shinsei."
She had been friends with him since before she could remember. But as of late, she felt kinda of akward around him. Midori had tried to explain this feeling to Shinsei's twin sister, Yume, but it hadn't come out right. Yume was protective over her brother and didn't like when other girls swooned over him. But Midori didn't exactly think that this was her liking him. He was just a friend, right? She didn't know anymore, but for now, she would hold those feelings in. She had overheard Yume and her mother long enough to know that only a truly special girl would be granted the chance to court him.

Re: Silent Lovers
Shinsei hated this part of the day- it was when Lady Mitsuko, father, and Kenji-sama left him to go train amongst themselves. Shinsei hated sparring his peers- though they were his age, he could never find a decent opponent amongst them. At the moment, Kenji Sensei was the only teacher outside of his family who could beat him in a match- but he did notice that meant he was only challenged by the masters of the dojo. He knew that this was his moment to relax and fight some weaker opponents. Hachirou seemed to hate Shinsei, even when they were younger- he thought of Shinsei as an unworthy son for Thraster-sama. Kenji Sensei had asked to be Shinsei's master when he was just a baby, and father took Hachirou Matsuya as his apprentice-though he still seemed to find more time to pass his knowledge onto his true son. The young human resented Shinsei for his family, his skills, his wings, and his attachment to his master. Hachirou must have learned about Shinsei's extra lessons with the god of death.
As the masters began to leave the dojo, Shinsei began to prepare for his inevitable challenge. Before he could even remove his kimono, Hachirou began tossing insults. Shinsei folded his shirt, placing it in his cubby near the entrance of the shool.
"I don't know why the masters favor you, Freak. Even your own father did not choose you as a disciple. Can you hear me, or don't your ears work either- at least I don't need to hear your weakling voice."
Shinsei watched as the shinai quivered in Hachirou's hands. He did not repay Hachirou's disrespect, Shinsei would allow his skills to speak for themselves. Shinsei knelt on the dojo floor, motioning for Hachirou to join him. He folded his feathered wings beneath his back- he wanted to defeat the loudmouth on equal terms. His opponent merely ran at him, ignoring Shinsei's honorable request for a duel- but Hachirou had met the ground before his strike could land. With one broad stroke of his shinai, Shinsei had tripped Hachirou- sending him skidding across the dojo floor. Shinsei regained his composure, stood, and bowed in the direction of his fallen opponent. He began to wipe the sweat from his brow, and walked towards his cubby. As he reached for his kimono, Shinsei recognised a familiar face watching him- Midori had come to visit the dojo. Why did her face look so red? Why was he blushing? Shinsei felt the sudden need of modesty as he covered himself with his kimono. Why did he feel embarrassed, people showed less reserve for clothing in his home than going shirtless in public. He had been noticing these akward moments emerging more and more as he spent more time with Midori.

Re: Silent Lovers
She blinked a few times and bit her lower lip. Her face felt on fire. She gulped and looked away towards, Hachirou. Midori frowned. It was very rude of him to say things like that. Didn't he know that his mother was very protective over him? If she were to here word that he was calling her son a freak? The girl shivered in fear. She didn't even want to think about it. There were so many people here who treasured him, what was this boy thinking? She turned her head towards Shinsei again and smiled warmly. Midori was trying really hard to not to let her heart pound. "D-don't worry about him, Sh-shinsei...I-I don't think your a freak." There, she at least got what she wanted to say out. But goodness, when did it become so difficult to speak?
Mitsuko was sitting outside in a nearby field, watching Thraster take on Kenji. She frowned, snapping her head to the dojo. But just as she was about to stand and investigate, she let out a giggle. She had never suspected it to be a Pheonix. Smiling, the blonde looked back at her grandson. "It seems that your son has aquired another admirer. Although its not one that I expected, but I rather like this girl."
Midori shifted her weight to her other foot. It was an awkward silence and she didn't like that. So, she decided to break it. "Do you want to go to the river today? My father is still out training and I don't have to be home for a while." She smiled as her eyes lit up but then dimmed. "Oh, but your mother would probably be worried and I am sure your sister will want to come if she found out." Midori lowered her head. She couldn't shake this feeling in her heart. She didn't want to be mean to her best friend, but something was telling her to well be alone with him. Forgive me Ayami-sama and Mitsuko-sama, I-I just want to be with just him for a while.

Re: Silent Lovers
He could feel a fuzzy feeling in his finger tips,Shinsei's ears began to buzz- was this the after effect of his sparring match with Hachirou? He trained constantly and was used to the heart-pounding surge that came during a duel, but this was different- a nervous combination of happiness and embarrassment. In the dojo's mirrors, Shinsei saw a skinny young man. He had long white hair and shiny black horns protruded from his head. His purple eyes seemed to lack the confidence that they last held- when he had entered the building this morning. He pressed the white feathers of his wings through the holes in his kimono. The kimono was his light-weight white shirt- the one he usually wore at home. He pulled his collar tight, so nobody would see the sweeping scar across his throat. He straightened his pointed rice hat.
Why was he so worried about what he looked like, he barely gave himself a glance when he entered the training hall this morning- maybe Hachirou's insults had touched a nerve. He didn't even think about inviting anyone else- he knew that if he remained in the dojo, Hachirou's threats would escalate into a full-blown confrontation. Shinsei didn't want Kenji-sama to return and see his student fighting the student of another master. He grabbed Midori's hand and hurried out of the dojo- why did he feel so embarrassed...

Re: Silent Lovers
She blinked a few times, waiting for him to let her know if he wanted to go to the river with her. Midori opened her mouth to speak but he had already taken her hand, pulling her along out of the dojo. The teen barely had enough time to slip on her sandals as she was lead outside. Her cheeks were pink as she looked down at their hands. Slowly a smile was creeping on her face. "Um, where are we going? Are we really going to the river?" After all these years, she didn't mind that he never talked. She had accepted him the way he was. In a way, he was refreshing. Midori could talk about anything to him and know that any secret would be safe with him. Her green eyes looked ahead and saw that they were passing one of the fields that was near the river. A light laugh escaped. They really were going to the river. "Ya know, we don't have to run...no one is chasing us." She tugged on his arm as she slowed down some. "I don't think Yume knows we are here, so what's the point in running? We aren't doing anything wrong." She tilted her head slightly to the right and smiled warmly.
It was nice to be alone with him. This hardly ever happened and she thanked the gods that this was happening. Midori would make the best of it. She looked to the setting sun and smiled as they walked along. Every now and then as they walked together, she would turn and glance at him. He looked different somehow. She didn't know how to explain it but, she liked it. However as they passed the field where her father was. She looked forward. Her cheeks bright red. And yet, even though she was nervous about her father seeing her holding hands with Shinsei, she didn't let her fingers unravel from his.
Mitsuko watched the two walk by and another light laugh escaped. She hadn't seen anything like it, a beautiful relationship just waiting to start. True, it wasn't the girl that she had thought he might end up with. But it eased her heart as she could see the love that was in their hearts. She looked back at Kenji and smiled. "So, when are you going to let your daughter court? She is getting to be that age you know." Mitsuko was always up to something when it came to love, but still she wouldn't press the matter on the two young love birds if their parents weren't for it. So, she decided to be a little bit sneaky for now.

Re: Silent Lovers
Shinsei was starting to feel sick as they passed the field- he could see his great grandmother, his father, and his master training in the grass. He knew that they would find out about his fight with Hachirou, he knew that they would discover that he ran away with Midori. He felt his vision begin to blur- what was happening. His ears continued to buzz, why was he looking at the sky- he could feel the ground against his back. He could see Midori's face- he could see her lips moving, but he couldn't hear her words. Shinsei's eyelids were getting heavy. He never noticed how pretty she was...
Kenji's blade contacted Thraster's weapon- sparks showered on the dueling friends. Thraster thought he could see Shinsei out of the corner of his eye- but when he turned, he could see nothing on the trail. Thraster could sense that something was wrong, but he couldn't place his finger on it. Thraster continued his duel, but his concentration was off.

Re: Silent Lovers
Midori's eyes widened as she watched him fall to the ground. Her face filled with worry as she knelt down. "Shinsei! Shinsei!!!!" She shook him slightly as she saw his eyes close. She bit her lip and looked up to see her father and Thraster dueling. "Papa! Papa! Help!" she said, looking back down at his face. She let her hand touch his cheek. "Please...please be ok." Midori watched him, not knowing that the others were soon around her. She hoped that everything was all right. That he would be ok. What could have happened to make him collapse?
Mitsuko was on her feet in an instant. "Shinsei...." she breathed before appearing next to him and Midori. "What happened child?"
"I-I don't know...he just fell. Please....make him better, Mitsuko-Kami-sama."

Re: Silent Lovers
Shinsei woke to the sight of paper cranes hanging from the ceiling of his bedroom. On his fifth birthday, Lady Mitsuko hand made them for him. Luminous blue light shone through the window, someone must have forgotten to pull his drapes- how did he get home??? He pulled the cold object from his forehead- it was one of Yume's goofy wash cloths, the one with the teddy bear sown into the fabric. He would need to return it to her room later. What had happened? Where was Midori???
Shinsei sat up in his bed, he could hear someone speaking in very low tones. The sound came from his doorway- someone had left the door opened slightly, only as far as a crack. A stripe of orange light streaked from the doorway across his bedroom floor. As Shinsei moved his legs to one side of his bed to stand- he could hear the faint sound of someone breathing. Shinsei kept only one chair in his room- it was a present from his grandfather, Tetsuya. It was a large wicker chair that almost touched Shinsei's ceiling, his mom had bought him large red pillows to decorate it. These pillows were currently occupied by a very tired young woman- Midori breathed slightly as she slept. The sound could not be called snoring, it was too soothing- yet Midori would whimper from time to time as she rested. At least he knew she was safe- but why was she here so late? Where was his hat? He knew that he was wearing it earlier, where could it have gone? It was his favorite hat, another gift from grandfather...
Shinsei peeked through the cracked door, recognizing the low voice as his fathers. Thraster was speaking to someone that Shinsei couldn't see. The other figure was kneeling on the living room floor. He could also see his sister glaring angrily at the figure- her purple eyes would've pierced through the figure if they could shoot arrows. Yume had curly black hair, just like their mother. She had her father's black-feathered wings and barbed tail. She wore a frilly purple dress, a leather coat that was too long, and a pirate hat with a huge feather- Yume had obviously been raiding grandma Morgunn's wardrobe again. She was holding Shinsei's hat- at least he knew it was safe. As the figure on the floor began to speak, Shinsei recognized the voice...
Thraster presented the most hateful scowl that he could muster. He even allowed his daughter to stay in the room- she was just as concerned about her brother as everyone else in the family.
"The next time you try to bully my son- I won't be as forgiving. Be glad that my wife was called away by Lady Mitsuko before this little meeting took place. Next time, I'll tell Shinsei that he has permission to not hold back on you."
"How do you expect him to fight master, when he can't even speak for himself?"
"If you have a problem with that, my student- then you can thank your father. I bear him no grudge- after all, he did help me rescue my son from Daisetsu. Any man who gives his life for that of my infant son is honorable in my book- but make no mistake that your father's final stroke against that villain is what rendered my son mute. I would think that you, of all people would be more understanding. Your father gave his life for my son, and in return I teach you- but I never taught you to be arrogant. I order you to train for one month in isolation in the mountains beyond the king's keep- if your attitude has not improved in that time, then I suggest that you find a new master."

Re: Silent Lovers
She had stayed up with him as long as she could, but soon she became tired. She sat down in the chair where she could watch over him in case he woke. Yume had come in and put a cold towel on his forehead. It was her favorite wash cloth, and she never shared things, but when it came to her brother she would do anything. Midori was an only child and didn't understand the closeness of those two but she hoped someday that she would share that bond with someone special. As time dragged on, her eyes became heavy and soon she was fast asleep, her hair in her face slightly. In her dreams, she watched him fall and how he had gotten home. She shivered slightly as part of her kimono had slide off her shoulder.
Yume glared at Hachirou. Her grandmother's hat was falling in her face and she would every so often push it back. She was holding onto her brother's hat tightly. "How dare you do this to my brother?! It is unforgivable! Don't ever hurt my brother again or you will have to deal with me!" It was clear she was upset. Everyone in the house was. She stomped her foot on the ground and looked back at the door to Shinsei's room. Yume looked sad for a moment. Her bottom lip seemed to quiver and then she took a deep breath. Her head snapped back, looking at Hachirou. "You even made Midori worry. Don't do that to my best friend!" She marched closer to him, her coat dragging across the floor. "Remember that the only one who can hurt my brother is me. And don't make me tell mom." she said, turning on her heels and marching towards Shinsei's room.
Ayami huffed as she had no clue what this so called meeting with Mitsuko was about. Her son had collapsed and she was not there to make sure that he was all right. She had been assured that he was being taken care of by Midori and other members of the family. "But Lady Mitsuko, I really must get back. My baby, he is hurt. Can't this wait?" The woman hated that she was away from her family. She loved each and every one of them. Her family was what she had dreamed of having for years upon years. Things always seemed to happen to her beloved children, particurly Shinsei. She pouted some as she waited for the other woman to speak.
Mitsuko smiled warmly. The love of this mother was so strong. But sometimes, it was to strong. If Ayami were to find out who had caused Shinsei harm, all hell would break loose. It would be better to just talk things out here, away from them. "Dear, you son will be fine. He is a lot stonger then you realize. And no this can't. I have called you hear because I want to know your thoughts on Midori."
Her purple eyes widened. What did this question have to do with anything? Why was it so important? She sighed and held her tongue. She knew of Lady Mitsuko's temper and while she wasn't scared by it, she never liked witnessing it. "Um, well, she is a nice girl. She always has been. She's very polite and well, she had become quite a beauty for someone her age. She has grown up these past years...." Ayami stopped speaking and frowned, looking confused. "Why are you asking me all of this?"

Re: Silent Lovers
Shinsei watched as his sister walked towards his bedroom door. He didn't feel the need to talk to her right now, she would be less worried after a good night's rest. Shinsei hopped back into bed, threw the covers over his legs, and replaced the wash cloth on his forehead. She rested his hat over his face and said something that he couldn't make out- he could feel her poking him as her muffled voice continued to speak. He felt his sister hug him. Shinsei waited a few moments before sitting up in his bed again. He wondered what everyone had eaten for dinner- but he wasn't hungry. He was, however, relieved to have his hat back.
It must be late, but Midori is still here in the room. I wonder if mom and dad are going to send her home tonight. She looks so peaceful while she sleeps. It was nice to have her come and visit me for a change- Yume gets to see her all the time.
Shinsei knelt on the floor in front of his chair. Midori still whimpered in her sleep- he thought he heard her say his name. Shinsei placed his hat on Midori's head- it always helped him sleep. She looked a little silly wearing his hat, and the holes poked through the top for Shinsei's horns. He watched her sleep for as long as he could- resting his head on her lap. Before long, he drifted off to sleep too.

Re: Silent Lovers
Yume marched into the room with upset eyes. She climbed on the bed and put his most treasured hat over his face. "Here I took care of it for you so you better wake up tomorrow. If ya don't, I am gonna kick your butt!" She leaned down and fixed the towel that was leaning some. Her tiny arms wrapped around him as best as they could. "Please wake up, brother. I will miss you if you don't." With that she got up and walked out stopping briefly to see Midori sleeping. She payed no mind, for everyone was worried about him.
Midori shifted slightly in her sleep. She moved her hand to rest on his, unknowingly. With him so close to her, she smiled softly and cooed. Her dreams took a turn for the better as she pictured them on the river watching the sunset. They were holding hands and just enjoying each other's company. When the sun shone through the window, her green eyes fluttered open. She stretched some and yawned. Blinking, she looked down at her lap. Her heart immediately jumped into her throat. He had obviously woken up and had fallen asleep on her. Why? Her cheeks went bright red as she looked around the room. She looked at the door; it was closed. Midori sighed. How was she going to get up from this chair? She looked down once again and watched him sleep. He looked to be so content, sleeping in her lap. It was then that all worry vanished. She moved her hand to stroke his cheek softly. Her graceful fingers ran through his soft white hair. She giggled softly as she watched a small smile appear on his face. He really is something special. So caring and sweet. No wonder every girl fawns over him. I can understand why. I think I am beginning to like him like that. But I can't! I can't. Yume would hate me as would Ayami-Kami-sama. But how can I not? He was worried about me...even when he was hurt. Shinsei...
She smiled as she continued to watch him sleep. Midori knew it would be soon that the rest of the family would wake up. So these few moments, she would treasure. For she knew that when his mother came to check on him, she would have to be ready for anything. Midori closed her eyes and let out a deep breath. She would just be honest. It always seemed to calm down Ayami. And as she continued to run her fingers through his hair, she felt extremely lucky. She had never stayed this close to Shinsei before. Maybe Ayami was finally becoming more trusting of her. She hoped that was the case.

Re: Silent Lovers
"So he must be feeling better if he walked over here to check on you," said Thraster.
The young girl seemed surprised- it made Thraster feel good that he could still be a sneak if he needed to. His wife failed to notice him leave their bedroom. Midori looked horrified- being the angel of death, Thraster had seen the look millions of times. Shinsei continued to smile and rest on the girl's lap-Thraster had never seen his son so happy. He thought it odd that he was falling in love with "quiet little Midori from next door" though- Shinsei was constantly followed by young girls, but he always seemed oblivious to their affection. Thraster had seen this turn of events years before they occurred-his powers of insight had revealed this as one of the many possible paths that his son would follow. Being the god of fate had some perks- but Thraster refused to look too deeply into his family's potential futures. Shinsei would be allowed to make his own choices on love rather than following some potential future that his father and mother would choose for him- Thraster respected his son more than that.
Midori's shock only seemed to increase as Thraster picked up his son, placing him back in his bed.
"Don't worry, Midori- I won't tell anyone if you won't"
Thraster's body melted into a formless shadow, and disappeared beneath the door.
Shinsei woke in his bed, once again seeing his paper cranes flying in the morning sunshine. Had it all been a dream, he thought that he had fell asleep near Midori- but here he was in his bed. Had it been a dream? Perhaps it was, but Midori was still here in the room with him-and wearing his special hat...

Re: Silent Lovers
She hadn't heard the god of death come in and she jumped slightly when he spoke. True their family was full of people who sneak around with the best of them, but it gave her quite a shock to see him. She instantly moved her hand back to her lap, her heart pounding as though she was going to be scolded or worse. Midori watched as he carried his son back to his bed. But his words made her even more confused. He wasn't going to tell anyone. Did that mean he knew? Of course he knew, he was also the god of fate, had he seen that they would end up together in the future? She didn't dwell on the thought as he disappeared in a rather creepy way. She shivered slightly, but was grateful that he hadn't seemed upset by her being here.
Midori heard Shinsei stir and she looked over at him. She smiled warmly, all thoughts of others being upset at her were now out of her head. "Good morning. I hope you are feeling better today." She sat up properly and fixed the hat that was on her head. "Oh, here...I don't know how it got there, but you must be missing it." she said, standing up and walking over towards the bed to give him his hat back.

Re: Silent Lovers
Shinsei smiled as he took his hat- he wondered if grandpa Tetsuya would be visiting the dojo today. What time was it? Shinsei realized that he was already late for his morning stretch. Shinsei wiped his hand across his forehead- careful not to scrath himself with his talons. His hands wiped away the sweat- he was drenched. His kimono was sticking to his chest- he couldn't let Kenji-sama see him like this. Shinsei frantically hopped out of bed- forgetting about the day before, or that his visitor was still in the room. As he ran towards his closet, Shinsei slammed his foot against his chair. Hopping on one foot, he continued his romp towards the closet. Shinsei peeled away the sweaty kimono and reached for the nearest clean shirt he could find. He thought that he had heard something behind him as he realized that Midori was still keeping him company. He kept his back turned as he tied his obi, and waited for his blushing to stop. Why was he so nervous, people in his house normally walked around wearing less than Shinsei while he was changing. Shinsei ran up to Midori, gave her a quick bow, and darted out of the bedroom-sprinting towards the front door.

Re: Silent Lovers
She tilted her head some as he went from refreshed to frantic. Midori looked confused but stepped out of his way as he bolted towards the closet. When he stubbed his toe, she looked worried. "Are you all right?" But he didn't seem to even realize that she was in the room. She kept a watchful eye on him to make sure that he didn't do anything else to injure himself, but as he undressed, Midori looked away her cheeks turning red. However, after a few moments, she turned her head just a little as she watched slide the clean kimono up over his shoulders. Her eyes watched him freeze for a moment and then continue on. Midori watched him turn and walk up to her giving a bow and then sprinting out the door. She stood there and blinked for a few moments, absolutely confused about what had just happened. Why was he so eager to leave? Had she done something to embarrass him? She lowered her head some. Her face felt hot. She fanned herself some to let the red in her face disappear. She moved the chair back, as it had moved some when he had stubbed his toe. She made his bed and saw that he had left his hat. "Shinsei...you left your hat." She picked it up and decided that on her way home, she would give it back to him.
She left his room to see the rest of the family eating breakfast, or more to the point brunch. Yume was eating pancakes and waved at Midori. "Brother is doing fine! He ran out here like he was on a mission." She went back to her eating as did Ayami who was trying to feed the newest addition to their family, little Aiko. "Thank you for letting me stay over last night. But I must be going. Mother will want me to train. See you later, Yume." she said, bowing to the family as she left to see her mother at the Phoenix dojo.
Noriko looked up as she was watching several other students train. "Midori, where have you been half the day has gone by now?" Her grey eyes looked up at her daughter as she stood up and walked over to her. She knew where she had been last night and it eased her heart to know that her daughter was such a caring girl.
"Oh, I just straightened up Shinsei's room so when he comes home, he won't have to." She replied with her cheek turning as red as her own kimono.
She smiled warmly. It was clear on her face that she liked or even possibly loved this boy. Noriko knew what it felt like to be in love and not be able to say anything. She knew all to well of the denial that she went through before she admitted that she loved her husband. And she would do whatever it took to make Midori know that love is an amazing thing and if you do love someone don't hide it, express it. "Well, lets start to train and we can talk while doing so."
